As Instagram Hits 400,000,000 Users, Does it Look Likely to Eclipse Twitter Forever?

Instagram, the endless photo library of meals we didn't want to see, is proving worth its weight in salt.

When Zuckerberg's corporation originally bought Instagram way back when for $1 billion (their largest acquisition at the time), the site had approximately 33 million regular users - a small ballpark compared to the 850 million already accrued by Facebook. Whilst some were sceptical of the move, Insta has seen a ridiculous growth in popularity, overtaking the likes of Twitter by some 100 million.

With impressive figures that prove that the photo-editing app is a force to be reckoned with, including the fact that 75% of users live outside the US - a new wave of businesses are beginning to expand their social media branding to include Instagram.

In a statement released on the company's blog, Instagram gushed the following:-

"We are thrilled to announce that the Instagram community has grown to more than 400 million strong. While milestones like this are important, what really excites us is the way that visual communication makes the world feel a little bit smaller to every one of us."

Despite adverts only appearing two years ago, the service has already seen optimistic forecasts of income. eMarketer purports to the company making an approximate $600 million in ad-revenue in this year alone, with that figure to raise to the exceptional figure of $2.8 billion by 2017. That number equates to 10% of Facebook's overall ad-revenue. Pretty smarmy.

So where does this leave Twitter? Well, quaking in its boots, perhaps (but probably not). Whilst growth has been exponential at Instagram HQ, Twitter is seeing an ominous slump. Don't get me wrong, their ad-revenue figures are still nothing to scoff at. However, the slow rate at which it took the site to increase their users by 100 million - 2 years as opposed to Instagram's 9 months - could point to problems. As companies choose to include wider-reaching social media outlets such as Instagram in their social media assault, money spent on Twitter advertising could be withdrawn in order to invest in other platforms.
