Twitter Launches a Brand New Look

Over the last few weeks, rumours circulated Twitter about the testing of a new interactive homepage.
Today it finally launched in the United States.

The interactive homepage is a lot more interesting than what you get currently. The idea is innovative and has a futuristic feel about it. No other social network has this and it might just be able to attract some new users. Who knows?

The New Homepage - blog.twitter.com

Currently the home page is bland. The page doesn’t show you what you’re missing, it just tries to force you to sign up.

If a non-Twitter user comes to the current page and sees a few photos on a slideshow (with the tiny tweet written at the bottom), I don’t think they will be convinced to join.

Sometimes, I even find myself being redirected to a really basic homepage that is just telling me to download the app – which I have. On my phone. But right now I’m on my desktop computer, so stop being inappropriate, Twitter! Hopefully the new homepage will get rid of this feature.

So what’s different about the new page?

The page is constantly changing with a pre-selected collection of popular tweets that are currently in the network. There are several categories to chose from including cute animals and celebs as well as a variety of news and tech blogs.

Initially the new page is only available for English language users, in the US and on the desktop web, but I am hopeful it won’t be long before it grows.

Apparently, Twitter is currently still developing the homepage, so I'm sure there will be a few changes made before it reaches us Brits!

I am confident in this home page and can see it having a knock on effect for Twitter. If nothing else, traffic might increase just to check out a new homepage that has been widely talked about on the web.

The idea that visitors can keep an eye on real-time news just via the homepage without even creating an account will encourage more people to get involved. This has also allowed Twitter to place ads on the homepage, which will help bring in more profit too (as if they need it)

According to Twitter, over 200 million people visit Twitter profiles every month but don’t sign in. If this new homepage can coax in just a tiny percentage of those visitors, the new page will have done its job. Good thinking Twitter, now just to roll it out to us other countries and you'll be unstoppable.
