Free Swimsuit Campaign Blows Up Instagram

If you're offered a freebie, you'll likely take it, right? A freebie is something anyone would appreciate, but can lead most to speculate what the inevitable catch will be. As they say, "nothing in life is free", and companies' promotions promising freebies always come with some kind of cost.

Californian swimwear brand Sunny Co. Clothing recently blew up Instagram with the above post, promising a free red swimsuit to everyone who re-posted the image and tagged the company. The catch - of course there is one - is that shipping and handling costs must be paid at $12.98, but with the cost of the swimsuit at $65, that's still a pretty amazing deal.

Of course, social media news spreads fast, and with Instagram's user-ship recently hitting a whopping 700 million, it's no surprise that the photo of the girl in the red swimsuit spread like wildfire. The post got re-posted at a crazy rate with thousands hoping to cash in on the deal, which the small company of just two entrepreneurs didn't see coming.

After about 20 hours into the 24 hour re-posting window, the company were, as expected, overwhelmed with the response and put out a message that they "reserve the right to cap the promotion if deemed necessary."

The promotion code for those who re-posted the photo was released by the company, with conditions that no exchanges or returns were allowed and that customers should allow three to six weeks for their 'Pamela' swimsuit to arrive.

However many shared their dissatisfaction at the promo codes not working and charging them the full amount, leading to the company having to manage a mass of complaints, on top of the thousands of free swimsuit orders they had to send out.

With the campaign blowing up, the people of Instagram and Twitter picked fun at the storm Sunny Co. Clothing had created via some brilliant memes...

So, it seems 2017 will be the summer of the red swimsuit, bringing that Baywatch look back to beaches everywhere. Meanwhile on Twitter, with most unlikely to turn down something for nothing, some users are trying their luck at 'winning' something free from a brand after surpassing a certain amount of likes or retweets...

Don't ask, don't get I suppose. Good luck to the guy.
