Did Deadpool have the Best Social Media Promotion in Marvel Movie History?

A little while back we mentioned Deadpool as an example of building up a social media presence in order to gain momentum for the release of a product or, in this case, a movie.

With only a couple of days until the films' release (Feb 10th), I've decided to take a look at what marketing surrounds the movie and discover why its social media campaign has worked so effectively.

Marvel/Fox took to Twitter with their playful bad-boy using the handle @deadpoolmovie, where they promoted to a following of over 300k people which were gained using a mere 270 tweets over the space of nearly a year. (The first tweet went out way back in March 2015)!

Now that's dedication and pretty impressive!

Well, impressive until we remember that the Walt Disney acquired, entertainment giant Marvel already has a following of 3.5 million on it's own Twitter account...

The online sensation of Deadpool has generated a lot of hype for the movie whilst the extra exposure will ensure the film is a massive success. It seems that everything about this film is a bit different or controversial in comparison to the many Marvel films that have come before it, but that only makes us love it more. It is also the first ever Marvel film that will be given an age rating as high as R - Restricted (that's a 15 if you're in the UK).

Fox/Marvel/Ryan Reynolds (whoever it is) is in beast mode when it comes to social media marketing for this film.

Deadpool as a somewhat "cheeky" character has been getting involved in all of the trends....

He's even been interacting with the big wide world and people he has been working with...

and not necessarily always politely...

He's even done charity photo shoots...

Everything surrounding Deadpool has been a little bit controversial and a lot a bit funny...

... which I suppose is what they're aiming for with this movie. Why not start as you mean to go on?

They also ran a "12 Days of Deadpool" campaign in the lead up to the Christmas Day trailer...

All I can say is, I'm horrifically jealous of whoever is getting to "be" Deadpool on Twitter and whoever is getting to put together some of this fantastic content. It's a brilliant idea and has done so much for Deadpool that Marvel alone would never have been able to do for it / could never get away with doing on their family friendly account.

A whole new audience has been reached and a highly targeted one at that. The levels of engagement on their YouTube movie trailer is higher than average according to MoviePilot, who says the average ratio of people who click "thumbs up" on content of this kind is .02 to .06. Deadpool is 1.04.

BoxOffice.com has also predicted this movie will make mega-money - something around the $70 million dollar mark (nothing major)... The number of tweets that the movie is now generating has even surpassed The Force Awakens... It feels so wrong, but so right!

This whole experiment has just proven social media is king once again. You can spend all the money you like on a billboard, but the crowds are online. Scrolling through the account, a lot of the tweets are coming from Ryan Reynolds, the actor hired to play Deadpool, so perhaps it is thanks to him that the movie seems to be snowballing into motion at such a fantastic rate.
