#SocialityBarbie Creator Darby Cisneros Calls Time on #Instagram Page

Since coming onto the scene in June with her hashtag laden, filter-ridden posts, Socality Barbie has pulled in over 1 million followers and been reported on by dozens of publications, such as Wired, The Guardian and Yours Truly. It presented a beautifully poignant dystopic vision of world where Barbie had been absorbed into the hipster stratosphere, 'gramming about filter coffee and feeling #blessed.
As Cisneros quite rightly points out though, it didn't really have much long term mileage. Ironically, a lot of the followers got the page via following the hashtags that were being posted with a satirical bearing, so it's probably safe to assume that Socality Barbie's substantial follower count was being supplemented by the very people she was making fun of. In many ways, questioning social media has become the latest social media trend, right now one of the biggest trending names is that of a model who made a point of quitting her SM accounts and denouncing the whole thing (in a series of videos on another, less popular platform).
It's a weird paradox, almost as if people want to severe their ties with their social media accounts, but also want to broadcast the fact that they're doing that, and can't find any better way of doing so than the very thing they're trying to turn their back on. Even writing that gave me a headache, let alone actually engaging in such bizarre activity. In that way, Socality Barbie is teaching us the most important lesson of all by calling time on her brief stint of social commentary.
Hopefully Cisneros will move on to some either, equally interesting project now that she's done with this, something very far removed from Instagram culture.
