Why Measuring the Influence of Social Media is Important

With so many social media blogs, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages there are in connection with business, it would be naïve to assume that every single one was littered with traffic. This is why it is important to measure social media when trying to have an impact in the online world of business. Through a successful networking strategy will come new business opportunities, and people will listen to what you have to see online. Customers and supporters will then share your brand, but the need to measure will still be necessary in order to ensure that the business is growing steadily.

Likewise, it is a good idea to gather an understanding who the big players are within your niche so you can gather information on how to get in front of competitors, and build key relationships.

The measuring field is about monitoring social media actions people take, and by doing this it helps businesses both keep track of their own success online, and also help marketers in particular reach the most influential people. Below are a few examples of companies that can help you with your social media tracking:

Klout is the most popular social media measuring firm. It assigns its users a score from 1 to 100 based on how much influence you or your business has online (1 having little influence, and 100 being very powerful).  Its formula for success is studying how many comments you get on posts, and also how many likes you receive.  It relies heavily on activity generated from Twitter and Facebook.

PeerIndex has become a strong contender in this field after being founded in 1999. It officially measures “authority”, which is similar to influence. It calculates based on subscores for specific topics, and also has separate activity and audience scores for you or your business.

PROskore measures online influence among professionals. It measures your professional reputation by analysing your working background, social media influence, and overall popularity online. There is a business networking component of the site where users can seek out and then refer businesses. A company or individual’s PROskore is comprised partly from participation in the network, and also by gaining recommendations from other members.

Kred is another online influence tracking tool. It connects to your Twitter and Facebook in order to determine your Kred influence score globally as well as in a whole host of topics identified through your activities.

These are a few examples of tools your business could turn to if trying to measure the influence of your business online. It is a crucial part of the online networking world that should not be missed out due to the nature of social media. A lot of effort goes in to making your page look neat and tidy, but if the target audience is not visiting the page/site then a new strategy will have to be devised.

The only way of knowing if the target audience is visiting your company online is through these measuring tools above, and in an ever expanding network, there is no doubt that more companies such as Klout will start appearing.
