Pinterest finally open to all

In a recent announcement, Pinterest have stated their decision to make the site open to all, scrapping their previous invite-only model.

The ‘virtual pinboard’ site has flourished in the past year, attracting 11.7 million visitors in January alone and increasing traffic by 6,000% in the last six months of 2011. Opening the site to all reflects this incredible rise to success and should see it develop even further.

The demand for the site is certain to increase following this change but it is debateable whether this will improve it. TNW Insider has discussed whether that, now it is open to all, the ‘quality’ of users and site usage will diminish. Being invite-only helped to ensure the majority of members were really passionate users with something worthwhile to share. The standard of the average user may drop now because of this change. Together with this, it is expected that there will be increased advertising and company usage, potentially irking many users.

Nevertheless, Lori Turner-Wilson has pointed out that retailers and brands are forced to think differently when using Pinterest. Companies already are using the site rather creatively and this could be extended with more joining, as they clamour for users’ attention. A few examples put forward by Turner-Wilson include Nordstrom’s stunning on-location photography, Oreck’s clean floors feature and Southwest Airlines photographic shots from the inside of their planes.

The stage is set to see more of this, as Pinterest is increasingly viewed as a haven for brands. This is partly due to the high traffic referral and the fact that the site lends itself to certain companies. Another reason is the demographics of the site. It has been shown that a large proportion of users are female (70%), in the age bracket of 25-44 and have a substantial household income. Hence, it is clearly a valued target market for companies. It is no wonder then, that there are already around 9.3 million retailers on the site, compared to just 6.7 million on Facebook.

Pinterest’s progress is destined to continue but for how long can it keep up this growth? Will the site develop for the better from this change?
