Launch of On This Day on Facebook

If you search On This Day on Facebook, have you seen what happens?

You get taken to a spectacular page where you can see all the hilariously embarrassing things you posted on this very day but over a range of years ago.
It’s great for nostalgia, sometimes. Other days, you look and you cringe. Sometimes statuses are best left forgotten, right?

Anyway, if you really love the little something Facebook had for you, you can share it onto your current wall and it will come up as a memory for all your friends to see.

If you really, really like what Facebook’s done, then you can change the settings to receive notifications whenever Facebook has a new memory for you to see (which is like, everyday so be warned). Currently, you only have the option of “All Memories” or “no notifications,” but there may be room for more filters. Who knows?

You may have thought this is sounding a lot like Time Hop, the third party app. Well then you’re right. It is absurdly similar but hey, Facebook wanted in on the action. To be fair to Facebook, they had been tinkering about with their memories feature since 2010, but it just couldn’t take off like Time Hop did with its 6 million daily users.

One thing I prefer about On This Day to Time Hop is the fact you can access it from a Desktop computer. But at the end of the day, the two nostalgia features are very similar. But bearing in mind that Time Hop has a better look and access to more networks than just Facebook; I think it will be very hard for Facebook’s memory thing to take off.

But then again, there are 55 million users (and growing) that are on Facebook and aged 35+. The people in this age range are notoriously less app savvy than the younger generation and are still fond of their desktop PC – so maybe Facebook are aiming On This Day at them? The only person I’ve seen using it on my timeline so far is my best friend’s 62 year old dad, so maybe Facebook are onto something after all.
