'Find Madeleine' Account for Missing McCann Child Closes Due To Twitter Trolls

ITV News
The official Twitter account of the search for Madeleine McCann has been closed due to a barrage of "abuse and negativity" that has thwarted their social media campaign. On the 4th October the account, which is not run personally by either Kate or Gerry McCann, stated the following:-

Having kept to their word, the account has been closed, with the campaign citing a focus on Facebook as their primary objective in the future. In a statement released on the official Facebook page for the search, the writer explained their dismay at the "the hatred and sheer viciousness directed at Kate and Gerry through our social media accounts for no logical reason at all". The post also alluded to other accounts, of similar nature to their own, that were allowing and aligning with other accounts that were abusing the McCanns via the site. This ambiguous statement has now been revealed to be directed at the @FindBenNeedham campaign, whose followers were using the page to discredit the search for Madeleine. In the past, individuals who follow the account for Ben have been known to take an anti-McCann stance.

As a result, the @FindMadeleine campaign blocked both of Ben's related Twitter accounts in an attempt to shield themselves. Ben's mother Kerry had this to say about the incident:-

All I can say is that Ben's campaign has never been anti McCann - we can't help the fact that some members of the public give their opinion about the McCann case just the same as people give their opinion about Ben's case. I have never once spoken badly about the family, I have only ever given my opinion about the way the two cases have been handled so differently by the authorities.

In January of this year, Needham did indeed speak out to question the differences in funding for the campaigns of both children: the McCann case has so far received £10.1million of taxpayers money, with Ben's having only obtained £800,000.

Needless to say, I'm sure the overwhelming majority of the nation hope that the negative publicity for both campaigns ceases to hinder their progress further.
