Wanted Man #LoganHale Brazenly #Trolls Police, Gets Arrested

Evening Standard
Facebook has become an active epicentre for manhunts in recent years, as well as general searches for missing people, but rarely do wanted individuals do anything quite this cocksure in response, or quite so stupid. The Polk County Police Department put out a call earlier this week for anyone who had seen Logan Hale (wanted on suspicion of firearm theft and armed burglary, presumably in that order) and on Thursday morning, Hale responded directly.

Having already changed his name to Logan 'FinallyFree' Hale, he went on to comment on the Facebook post, openly mocking the police with comments like 'HELLO here I am'. Police and other commenters responded by advising him to give himself up, but he responded by continuing to be a smarmy git. Amusingly, the police played up to it, firing back with 'Remaining 'at large' is only going to result in your having to change your FB name from 'Finallyfree' to 'Back In Jail'.

The exchange carried on for a while after that, but it didn't bring the police any closer to tracking Hale down, much less convincing him to turn himself in. Then, at 5pm that afternoon, he was spotted riding in a car and promptly arrested with no resistance. His family have since relayed that he had been planning on turning himself in anyway. The best part though? The response from the sheriff's department.

"Logan Hale, you are on your way to jail. Your attempts to hide were to no avail. Maybe you'll make bail. Either way,...

The actual police callout was a part of the #FridayFelons initiative, which was set up to help police searches in a way that actively involves and engages the public. Equally, it would seem, it could also be employed to broadcast messages directly to offenders, persuading them that turning themselves in. It's hard to say whether not Hale would actually have come forward had he not been caught, but the sentiment of the police comments, while mocking, was also sternly sympathetic, assuring that he still had the chance to turn his life around.
