Top Apps of the Month - July 2015

So we're here again already, can you believe it?

I won't dilly dally around, I'll jump straight in because there's nothing worse than not getting down with the fun stuff, especially in a month as exciting as this one.

For Gamers

Leo's Fortune
£3.99
iOS & Android
http://i.ytimg.com/

This is probably my personal favourite this month!

Leo's lost his gold and it's up to you to help him find it.

Leo's Fortune is a platform game where you have to navigate up and down, left and right, in order to recover his golden coins.

And you get to play as this adorable blue/green ball of fluff with a tache.

Leo harnesses many of the powers you expect a puffball to possess. He can glide, inflate, bounce and push things around. Obvs.

The game is fast paced, cute and sinister at the same time, all the while being a really good little challenge that will keep you entertained a lot longer than your average platform game.

Agar.io
Free
iOS & Android

Do you remember Miniclip.com? All those skills you picked up from the hours spent sampling their mini games can finally be put to good use as Agar.io, an online game made by Miniclip, has been made into an app.

Now that Agar.io has arrived on iOS and Android too, no-one is left out of the fun that is Agar.io.

Basically, you're a ball. Or a cell. And the aim is to become the biggest cell and split into more cells and take over all the little ones! Ah, the power!

You start off as a weeny, speedy little cell but as you get bigger - you get slower. This makes it harder to dodge the big boys who are cornering you but if you survive, the world is your lunch.

You can even customise your cell to make the game more entertaining, look at Doge go!

For the Creative Ones

Adobe Photoshop Mix
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com
Free
iOS & Android

At first you think Adobe Photoshop Mix is your average photo editing tool. But I promise you there is so much more fun to be had with this editor than others on the market at the moment.

The biggest joy of Photoshop Mix, as you probably can gather from the name, is that you get to pick and mix images together.

The app is easy to use and makes the splicing together of images simple for all of us average Joes.

There's no need to throw out all your other editing tools either, because Photoshop Mix still has all your typical editing features

I've seen horses with a cat's head (right), women turning into water and parrots the size of Mount Everest. Whilst this could be seen as "just a bit of fun," it is also a really helpful piece of software to enable people to create brand new, innovative images, whether it's for personal or business use.

It's up to you, the opportunities are endless.

Hola Launcher
Free
Android

Tired of not being able to personalise your Android phone enough?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com
Hola Launcher is a way to change things up! It's really easy to use and comes with so many cool features and widgets.

Because the launcher is small in size (2MB), it is perfect for minimising the memory use whilst keeping your phone fast and still providing you with the best features and a beautiful, new appearance.

Some of these new features include:

Automatically categorizing your apps into folders, which you can adjust yourself and scroll through without having to return to the home screen.

A huge range of wallpapers, themes and fonts which you can download from the online store (updated every week). The themes change both the background and colour scheme and also the apps and borders!

You can search quickly by swiping down on your screen or by voice search.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

For The Techies

JustWatch
Free in UK/$0.99 in US
iOS & Android

http://www.androidpolice.com/

JustWatch is a resource that allows you to watch movies and TV shows online without breaking the law.

It’s been around for a while as an online service, but wasn’t an app until now.

The app can rally up all the information to tell you where the best online location is for watching the movie or series of your choice, whilst also showing you if it is available on a subscription service like Netflix, where you can buy/rent it at the cheapest price and if it's on a free site like Hulu or Crackle.

The Price Drop tab keeps you up to date with the hottest deals whilst the Popular tab tempts you with all of TV and Film’s finest hits.

Intel Remote Keyboard
Free
Android

http://cdn1.expertreviews.co.uk/
You usually hear Intel’s name in conjunction with hardware and Dell PCs, but they have delved into the world of software and we see the birth of the "Remote Keyboard."

The app connects to any PC on the same Wi-Fi network and it can act as a replacement PC keyboard and mouse.

You can control your mouse by using a sensor in the middle of the screen and type on the keyboard as normal. The app is very fast, intuitive and currently one of a kind in terms of it’s performance and idea.

This means you can use your laptop from afar, like if you’re laying in bed watching a movie. Or, you're saved if heaven forbid the cat spills milk over the keyboard and your Y and S key are destroyed in the process (speaking from personal experience there).

WiFiMapper
Free
iOS & Android
http://rack.0.mshcdn.com/

WiFiMapper only came out a couple of months ago on iOS and popularity has snowballed to such an extent that an Android version has already been released.

This app helps you find WiFi hotspots so you can find free internet worldwide. They have over 2 million recommended free hotspots round the globe, so you’re unlikely to ever be far from some!

The app also gives you a little information on the venue where the hotspot is too. Does it make a good latte? Is their connection reliable?

What more could you ask for?

For Dog Owners (it's a niche market, I know)

Tindog
Free
iOS & Android

Okay, hear me out. This isn’t as weird as you think it is.

Tindog is a social app for dog lovers. Users upload their dog's profile, which includes a picture of their beloved pooch and then they can connect with nearby users who have the same interests or perhaps a love for the same breed.

http://rack.0.mshcdn.com/

As a dog owner, I can see how this might be beneficial.

It saves you going onto pet forums to ask questions about your pet and you can discuss more local topics like good vets, walking spots and dog-friendly places.

The whole reference to Tinder is a little odd, swiping right for yes and left for no. But rest assured, the app isn’t all about setting people (or dogs) up on dates. It just doesn’t want  you to walk your pets alone anymore. But, whilst we're thinking about it, 101 Dalmatians, (possibly the best film of all time) proves that dogs bring people together.

Another thing to consider: socialising your pet is the first step to a good dog, so everyone's a winner with this one.

For Fun Lovers

Truth and Lie Detector Scanner
Free
iOS

Whilst this particular app is only available on iOS, there are plenty of alternatives on Android that have been cropping up ever since the initial success of the Truth and Lie Detector Scanner.

Ever since the humble app evolved, pranks and tricks have been among some of the most popular. So it comes as no surprise that this one has been a mega-hit too.

We've seen apps that make it look like your drinking a pint, ones that make a shot noise when you hold your phone like a gun, ones that claim to guess your friend's phone number... and now... we can trick our friends into thinking we know the truth.

This app is only for entertainment, so don't go all Jeremy Kyle on me. Whilst it doesn't provide true lie detecting or scanning functionality, it does allow you to rig the results (or let them happen randomly) and send your friends into a frenzy of panic.

Ultratext
Free
iOS & Android

With the recent rise of the almighty GIF, we knew it wouldn’t take long for a GIF app to start making the big bucks.

Ultratext is an easy to use app that helps you create GIFs and send them via an MMS or iMessage to your buddies.

www.theverge.com
You can blow up text, emojis, selfies and other images to ultra-fy. You can string together a sentence by pressing space bar between each word and these words will come up in the same space, one after the other: making an animated loop of your sentence.

There’s not an endless amount to do on the app but we totally love it because it’s spicing up messaging, which to be quite frank, has been getting a little boring recently.
