Terrifying New McDonald's Ad Depicts World Ruled by Emojis

It's the grim, sunburst yellow future we're all living in fear of. In some kind of inconceivably horrific Invasion of the Body Snatchers style takeover, all of humanity has been assimilated into a horde of smiling, jubilant, freakish, emoji-headed automatons. Automatons who love Maccy D's.

Continuing their relentless campaign to convince everyone that McDonald's is some kind of happiness epicentre where all the most important moments of people's lives take place, they've unveiled a French advert which depicts people with emojis for heads having a swell old time and eating burgers (which explains where all the regular people went). The whole thing plays over a disgusting cover of The Buggles' 'Video Killed the Radio Star', lacing the whole thing with a twinge of irony that is still completely baffling even if it was intentional.

Exactly what the ad is trying so hard to convey is kind of beyond me, the emoji heads cycle through a range of different expressions from start to close and not all of them are on the positive side of the spectrum. Are they suggesting that when you're in McDonald's your emotions become less subtle, or more overt? Do introverts just shrivel up and die when they walk through the doors or are they just kept out with some kind of high-tech security system? Perhaps they're just saying that emojis are 'fun', and that McDonald's is similarly 'fun'. Nope, I'm sticking with the body snatchers theory. It makes the most sense.

To add to the confused tone, the ad employs the staple French Maccy's tagline - 'Come as you are'. They've been using it for years, but being that it's also the title of a Nirvana song about the crushing, depressing power of societal conformity, you know what, I take the 'confused tone' bit back, that part makes it even clearer that we're being invaded. Best get in that bunker, the emoticons are coming to slice off your head, and Ronald McDonald is leading them to your front door.
