Green Party Leader Goes Live on Facebook Q&A

The leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, is taking part in an exclusive Q&A session today (Tuesday) at 1pm. But it isn’t a televised event, nor is it a public one. It is taking place via The Independent’s Facebook page! Voters have the chance to question a party leader, directly, on anything they wish.

The Green Party have really come into their own this year and, although they are a highly unlikely choice to win the general election, they are finding more ways to reach out to the general public.

I appreciate what the Green Party are doing. They’re working hard on their ideas and getting themselves a real reputation, if not for this term, then maybe next.

Earlier in the month they released a cracking video that went viral. It explained, through the medium of song, how they were different to the four current “serious” parties. Or rather, how the other parties are just the same as each other.

Bennett is being brave but also very clever. She is turning to social media to spice things up and is willing to get into the nitty gritty with all of us “normal folk.” Speaking to a political party’s leader has never been so simple and easy, so whilst we expect plenty of trolls, we can also expect to see something revolutionary.

Facebook’s users are primarily young people. And who votes for the Green Party? A lot of young people and a lot of students. Bennett really has the right idea.

Perhaps speaking through the medium of Facebook will put her more at ease and allow her to speak without the hounding from press or other politicians. Instead she will be speaking one to one with the voters, with her main audience indeed, which is how politics should be.
