Grumpy Cat, From Internet Sensation To Movie Star

Rebel Without A Paws

Grumpy Cat appeared on our screens two years ago after the owner's brother shared a picture on Reddit of the permanently grumpy-looking cat. Grumpy Cat went viral very quickly and a load of memes were created featuring the cat. Two years after becoming an internet sensation, Grumpy Cat will be starring in a Christmas film to be shown on the American television channel Lifetime. Fittingly the film will be called Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. Is Grumpy Cat paving the way for internet stars to also become movie stars?

Evidently, social media played an important role in Grumpy Cat's rise to fame. Grumpy Cat's Facebook page: The Official Grumpy Cat has over 6 million likes, her YouTube Channel has over 180 thousand subscribers and even more views. Thanks to social media, Grumpy Cat has become a star in its own right, with her own manager, Ben Lashes, who also represents other famous internet cats The Keyboard Cat and Nyan Cat. Grumpy Cat can also be found on red carpets and even was seen at the MTV Movie Awards wearing a cat-sized Pharell Williams' hat. Following this quick rise to stardom, Grumpy Cat has also released a book, The Grumpy Guide to Life: Observations from Grumpy Cat, and another one is also in the works. With such an immense popularity, it would seem natural that a major television channel would choose an internet sensation to be a part of a film, hoping to bank on Grumpy Cat's huge success online.

Grumpy Cat is not the only internet sensation to try and break from only online presence and bank on their popularity, The Apparently Kid, a more recent internet star, is featured in an commercial for pet food. After appearing on the popular talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, will the Apparently Kid like Grumpy Cat, also appear in his own film? Or come out with his own book?

Internet sensations and viral videos come and go; one week we're watching a cat doing something cute and the next that cat is forgotten and it's a video of a kid crying because he is having a baby brother not a sister. Grumpy Cat is an iconic internet star, and even after two years, has found ways to keep the views up and the likes coming. Yet Grumpy Cat stands apart from the rest of the internet stars, who have their five minutes of fame and then disappear into the oblivion. It would seem unlikely that we would see more viral videos appearing in films and adverts. We also have to wait and see if Grumpy Cat's film will actually be a success and if his millions of Facebook fans will actually watch the film.
