Curious Social Media: Facebook 'Match Machine' App for Valentine's Day

We've all been there; it's the week of Valentine's Day, and you're bracing yourself to face it all alone. Nobody likes the idea of a lonesome Valentine's, whether you think of it as 'lame and pointless', or if you genuinely enjoy the romantic celebration. Well NO FEAR, for this year MTV is here, to fulfil all of your Valentine's needs. Or, to put it simply, they have a present for all social mediaites out there who are looking for something exciting in the lovey-dovey season. Their 'Facebook Match Machine' is a promo for their new TV show 'Are you the one?'. Airing on the 14th February - that's Valentine's Day for all you non-believers - the show looks to help young singles find their perfect match.

Does the MTV Valentines Match Machine sound a bit out there? Quite possibly. It has essentially been created to promote a TV show where 20 young singles try to find their perfect match. The catch? They all win $1 million, but only if they're successful in their search. The result is kept secret from the singles, so they spend the series trying to uncover their mystery lover.

For all the singles out there, the Match Machine could be just what they're looking for. I mean, we spend so much of our lives on social networking sites, it makes sense we might find the love of our lives lurking around on there too.

Many people turn to trending dating apps, like Tinder, which also uses preselected Facebook info to help you on your way to find your match. The good thing is, where Tinder has the benefit of its 'mutual friends' feature, MTV match machine is essentially a unique dating algorithm, that matches you with an actual Facebook friend. Cue romantic story of 'I knew it all along... he always liked my pictures and stuff...'

Who knows, your perfect match could have been hiding on Facebook all along. And it's all a bit of fun, so there's no point in not trying it out. You simply enter in your Facebook details, select 'male' or 'female', and it will comb through your personal info, location, interests and mutual friends to find a suitable person.

The Date Report tried it out, and reported that most of them were matched with gay friends or gay ex-room-mates. Those girls who, for a laugh, searched for a female match quite often were matched with best girl friends. When I tried it out, I guess it cheated a bit, because (surprise, surprise!) I was matched with my boyfriend. This seems to be the case for a lot of people who are in 'Facebook' relationships and tried it out anyway.

The Match Machine has another element of fun - you can 'Try again without [your partner]' - allowing you three goes in total. When I tried again, I got my boyfriend's best friend, and when I searched for a female match (why not?!), I got my boyfriend's best friend's girlfriend. So maybe it's quite accurate after all!
