Amandla Stenberg Comes Out Via Snapchat

Instagram
The beauty of social media becoming more widely used is what it allows people to do and the messages it can get across. We're used to seeing people promoting petitions via Facebook and Twitter or seeing celebrities post pictures on Instagram showing they support this, that or the other and now it's Snapchat's turn to share in the glory.

Snapchat has been around for a while now and having the chance to follow different celebrities and publications is only one of the bonuses it offers. On Thursday the Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg took over Teen Vogue's Snapchat as part of the magazine's promotion of the tag #BlackGirlMagic. Just hearing about that is pretty amazing. Amandla used her opportunity to talk about diversity as well as to come out as bisexual.

Generally Snapchat isn't the sort of social media platform you'd expect someone to use to admit to something so important to them. People often make a big deal out of a celebrity coming out so when someone does it as a sort of last thing on a Snapchat video... It really makes a statement.

The world is changing and social media is changing with it. Not only are videos a more common way in general to share but you also have celebrities using them to get messages out into the world. Amandla said herself that there needs to be more diversity in the media for women and that she herself is still learning to love herself as a black, bisexual woman. She admits it's not easy but encourages others to try too.

This is going to be a big thing for all the teenagers out there who might feel like less because of their skin colour or their sexuality. Snapchat is such a big platform these days and the millions of girls, across the world, the girls who might have needed to hear something like that at that exact moment are going to feel something akin to hope.

To some people social media is pointless, a distraction and something that causes more trouble than it's worth. But when a social media platform is used like this, used in a way to try and help people then it just proves that actually, social media can truly do some good.
