App Review: FotoJet Collages & Editing

FotoJet, by PearlMountain Technology, is a free online app that allows you to make collages and edit your photos. But what makes it different from the rest?

Photo editing and content creation software is becoming more and more accessible and less and less innovative, but FotoJet (www.FotoJet.com) is a spectacular tool with some bright, fresh ideas.

Thanks go to FotoJet.com and the Songbird staff

When I first loaded FotoJet I was greeted with a clear, crisp and eye catching website, suffice to say I was eager to click that "Get Started" button.

The editing software itself is simple. You can add filters, flip and rotate your pictures, crop them and adjust the exposure, saturation, contrast, brightness and hue. All the normal stuff.

The fun comes in with the collage creation, which is what this app is really about.

It took me a few minutes to find my way around but it is fairly self explanatory and I coped fine without a tutorial.

The in-browser app has 2 tabs down the left side.

The first tab on the far left says "All," "New" and "Popular." These tabs are great for giving you the lowdown on what's hot and what's not. Then there are tabs just in from that which give you choice of collages, Social Media templates and Photo Cards. They each have drop down menus that include templates of  certain themes and styles. whether they're "classic," "modern," or for "weddings" and "holidays."

We'll start with the collages:

When you've chosen whether you want a "New" template or a "3D" template (one of Songbird's personal favourite 3D templates is featured in the image at the top), you can scroll through the selection offered. The collages that can incorporate less pictures are nearer the top, whilst the collages that allow you to insert 6 or 7 images can be found nearer the bottom.

The app is pretty interactive and clear, but you do have to scroll your mouse over the template to find out how many images it incorporates. But once you've worked that out, you're on the home straight.

It's a shame when they have a great collage but you don't have enough pictures to fill it. Or vice versa and you have many photos and the collage is a "one image only" special. But with over 320 templates to explore and none as boring as the "Insta-collages" you get these days, I don't think you can be too miffed.

These weird and wonderful collage templates are great for personal use, for sticking round your house, for mood boards, for use on your kid's homework and even for creating snazzy adverts for your business without the need of a graphic designer.

As for the Social Media section, this was a bit of a disappointment. We hope that the guys at FotoJet plan to expand this, as right now, it only features Facebook posts/covers and nothing else.

The Photo Cards are fine, but like I said I think this app is really about those collages.

I've never been a huge advocate of congratulating someone with an image online or with a card you've printed off your Lexmark which is covered in self indulging images of yourself/family. I think you're better off tootling down to Clintons in this instance. But, if sentiment is your thing and you've been known to splash out on Moonpig, perhaps this one will save you a few pennies.

When it comes to working within the templates, there are certain elements that are completely flexible (text, font, colour, image editing) but other things that are truly set in stone (like the placement of the images/text,the number of images and the colours of the template). So this is a good app, with a quick fix for your images but if everyone was using them there wouldn't be much variety floating around.

Whilst I love the designs of the templates, I don't think it'd hurt to be able to adjust colour schemes.

Everything else to do with this online piece of software works great. It's smooth, I've not been left confused or lost and the basic templates are great fun. Whilst I do think there is room to make the editing a little more flexible, this is a great app if you're not a computer whiz or if you want a quick way to make a stylish and professional looking image.

Overall, we're giving FotoJet a Songbird Rating of 4 stars out of 5.
