There’s a New English Language Leaving Parents Baffled

tvstreamtimes.co

New studies on the English language prove that our vocabulary is growing faster than ever before.
It seems that mobile phones and instant messaging have been the catalysts behind these recent developments, which have left the older generation struggling to keep up.

Professor John Sutherland from UCL is the UK’s leading English expert. He was commissioned by Samsung to carry out research in order to mark the launch of their S6 phone! His study looks at common social media slang and text language. The main outcome proved that parents have no idea what their children are going on about.

I think I can say quite comfortably that this generation must be one of the most creative of all time. They have spent their youths thinking of the funniest status, learning how to take and edit the most beautiful picture and coming up with images and phrases to describe situations.

Not only this, but the breakdown of class systems and segregation has meant that we’re learning new cultures and new slang every day. The barriers aren’t there anymore, so our languages are becoming more and more integrated.

But I suppose the reason you clicked on this article wasn’t to hear about the hows and the whys of this new language. You wanted to see what these words are like.

So here it is: a list of the top ten phrases on social media that parents simply don’t understand:

  1. Fleek
  2. FOMO
  3. Bae
  4. ICYMI
  5. Deadout
  6. TBT
  7. LMK
  8. RN
  9. Thirsty
  10. NSFW

The temptation to assume you all knew what I was talking about nearly got the better of me this time.

But I will be kind and give you the definitions. So in the same order:

  1. Looking good/perfect
  2. Fear Of Missing Out
  3. Before Anyone Else - someone special/a term of affection
  4. In Case You Missed It
  5. Rubbish/Empty/Finished
  6. Throwback Thursday
  7. Let Me Know
  8. Right Now
  9. Looking for attention
  10. Not Safe For Work

For the eagle eyed amongst you, you can see some absolute classics have been forgotten, like ROFL, GTG and BRB. I, for one, am gutted.

My poor mother has only just caught up with this kind of classic text talk, so there’s no way I’m going to have time to teach her some of these. But hey, I think that’s for the best…

It’s crazy how much language changes and although we think we’re pretty set in our ways with language, let me leave you with this final thought…

In 63 AD a Roman scholar complained that students of Latin were writing in a made up and “artificial” language.  That artificial language became French.

So, who knows?  In a few years’ time we could have a whole new language on our hands.
