Speakalegend Is Siri For Kids

Kids Say The Darndest Things

Have you ever wanted to talk to have a conversation with your favorite fictional character? As a child I would have done anything to talk to Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, but that kind of technology had not been invented yet.

Oren Jacob and his business partner, Martin Reddy, used to work for Pixar before launching the interactive children's app SpeakaLegend. Children using this app can talk to a bunch of characters created for them, and these characters will also respond to the children's musings, much like Siri will reply to you when you ask her about the weather today. Except that children have a totally different way of communicating than adults, and so to make SpeakaLegend come to life Oren Jacob and Martin Reedy had to come up with a system that would understand the sometimes broken up speech of a small child.

That's how PullString was born, speech recognition software tailored for children. It recognizes what the child says and can also respond to it, by looking into its massive database of responses. Tablets and smartphones have already revolutionized the kid's entertainment industry, with kids everywhere playing games on tablets and using the internet like they were born to do so. This new software could also change the future of apps, internet and how we use social media.

Speech recognition capability, apps that can recognize your speech, is a major selling point for phones, video games and TVs. Everyone has always dreamed of a future where speech recognition is everywhere, where switching on the lights is as easy as saying 'Lights'.  This app is the starting point to making this dream happen. Indeed, if children are used to talking to their phones and tablets then, when they are no longer children, they will be used to this kind of software.

Social media networks have yet to jump to speech recognition, but if even children are using this kind of technology, it won't take long for Facebook and Twitter to jump on the bandwagon. Maybe one day, you'll be able to say your thoughts out loud and watch them become a tweet or a Facebook status without you having to use a keyboard.
