The Facebook page dedicated to the search is titled ‘Find Gareth Huntley’, and currently has around 6,500 likes. The page updates everyday on any new revelations or leads in the case, in which the 34-year-old went missing on Tioman Island late in May.

Huntley was visiting a waterfall on the Island, and did not return, and this sparked his friends and family to begin a search party on the Island. Local reports suggest that Huntley was working and living on the Island, and he went on a jungle trek on May 27. After two days of being missing, a police report was lodged at the station on the Island and authorities seemed the assistance of the General Operations Force to try and locate Gareth.

Various hashtags including #FindGareth and #FindGaz have now been created in the hope that momentum will help find him safely. It also makes it easier to track any new information online about the search for the British tourist.

Thus far it has been a source of information for many, and one user provided updates about how the search party is expected to involve the police force, personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces, and the Fire Brigade.

Many photos of Gareth have been spread online with optimistic hopes of a safe return, and this is comforting for the family: “Lets stay positive, we’re doing great progress and there’s still hope. We’re not going anywhere until we find Gareth.”

Others are using the online platform to try and keep momentum going, and to further spread the word on the worrying event: “Gareth loves Malaysia. Malaysia, show Gareth your love” and “Please help find #GarethHuntley missing in Malaysia since 27 May #FindGareth.”

Supporters of these social media campaigns are also showing gratitude towards the authorities, and are using photos taken from the operation to do so: “So glad to see boots on the ground and a heli in the air today. Helicopter still going after nightfall. Gareth is getting the resources he needs. Thank you to Philip Hammond, and Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.”

Twitter has seen a strong army of people supporting the cause also, and this is where the now popular hashtag of #FindGareth is now spreading. It shows just how powerful a source Twitter is, and how momentum can be gained on a website such as this.

The search will go on for now, and if it wasn't for the power of social media, a lot of people living outside Malaysia would have no idea about the severity of the situation. It shows the positive power that social media can and does have, and in times like this, it brings the online community together in hope and optimism.
