A Song About Social Media! Great? No!

“Ode” to Social Media?

Social media is a force massive now, and people from all walks of life have to take it seriously, as it can genuinely change the world for the better. Well now there is an ode to social media in the form of a song, and it is possibly the worst thing ever created. The song is penned by Phil Mershon and performed at a social media conference by IT company employee Mary McCoy.

It has worked though, as the song has gone viral with 73,000 hits in two days. Somehow this dreadful piece of performance art has become a social media sensation. McCoy is filmed looking and dancing very awkwardly, and you can imagine an invisible spirit holding her at ransom as she stumbles through her performance. The crowd look baffled at what they are witnessing, and they had to pay $1,300 to attend the event. Mershon - unforgivably - comes on stage, sporting sunglasses, in a failed attempt at looking cool, and the whole thing nosedives.

He then addresses the audience: “I hope as we scatter we never forget, that our posts live forever even when we go to bed.” Well, the audience will never forget this moment, and counselling is a possibility for these unfortunate folks.

After 5 minutes of pain, McCoy leaves the stage to muted applause from a very polite crowd, but the online community was far from polite when discussing the performance; here are just a couple of reactions:
Amazingly horrible song and a sad day for humans.
The level of awkwardness cannot be measured with manmade instruments.
These are just two reactions, with many more using colourful language, and even questioning humanity due to this social media song. The video has the feel of a throwback, and many will be wondering whether time travelling is upon us, but there is also room for praise.

They have created a buzz around this video, and the intention of the creators may have been to make something so bad, so unthinkably horrendous that it just could not be overlooked. And yes, it is that bad. The feeling you get upon watching it will make you want to share it, as disbelief will absorb your soul. It is actually a clever piece of marketing from the company, even if they do look a bit daft.

As for McCoy, there is very little chance that this is a breakthrough moment in a possible career as a vocalist, but she has made a name for herself. Social media deserves some kind of ode purely because of the influence it has, but if this video continues to travel around the internet, then it could be viewed as a joke.

Check the video above, and please ensure you have a brown paper bag, and stress ball at the ready. You’re going to need it.
