Social Media News: Social Media jumps in defense of topless olympic skier

Jackie Chamoun, Olympic Skier for Lebanon this year, has been under fire in her native Lebanon for racy photos. The 22 year-old had posed semi-naked for a calendar photo shoot with photographer Hubertus Von Hohenlohe 3 years ago. Unfortunately, secret video footage of the photo shoot surfaced online, which was much more risqué than the calendar photos. The images have caused uproar in Lebanon, with calls for a ministerial inquiry. The political reaction to the photo shoot has sparked a social media campaign, with supporters from all over the world defending the young skier. Using the hashtag #StripForJackie, loads of supporters around the world have stripped down to make a stand against the political uproar.

Although the photo shoot took place 3 years ago, video footage showing the behind-the-scenes of the shoot surfaced online just ahead of the 2014 Sochi games. The leaked video footage has angered a mostly conservative Lebanon, with ministers claiming that the images risk tarnishing the international standing and reputation of Lebanon.

Lebanon is fairly liberal in the Arab world, and women are not usually constrained in their choice of clothing. However, by Western standards the country is mainly conservative, and the photos were seen to be too raunchy. The sports and youth minister for Lebanon called for an investigation following the leaked footage, in order to protect the reputation of the country.

Chamoun was barred from speaking to the Lebanese media, but she did issue an apology on her Facebook page. "I know that Lebanon is a conservative country and this is not the image that reflects our culture. I fully understand if you want to criticize this."

However, the political reaction to the images has backfired. Many have called the comments made by the minister 'patriarchal', and accused the government of focusing attention in the wrong places, and leaving the country's real issues unaddressed.

Local media has been quick to add that an athlete stripping down for a photo shoot is not a high priority for the country. What's more, many Lebanese citizens admit that before the decree, they were not aware that the country had athletes competing in the Winter Games.

Despite Jackie Chamoun's apology, many Lebanese and international supporters flocked to the internet to support the skier using the #StripForJackie hashtag. The 'I Am Not Naked' social media campaign has already amassed 14,000 likes on Facebook. The four leaders of the campaign, wrote on the page, "Some women are beaten or killed, others are raped, and the media shifts their attention to a confident talented beautiful woman who represents her country at the Olympic games".

A huge number of followers have taken part, with some companies adopting the hashtag campaign into their adverts. Many feel they are fighting censorship in the country.

Despite the proposed investigation into the risqué images, Jackie Chamoun was still able to compete in the Sochi Winter Games.
