Social Media News: Let's eat social!

Forget hash browns, now it's all about hashtags. Birdseye has jumped aboard the social media ship, and gone social on their products. Given the rapid growth of social media, it's no surprise that food products are joining in the game. So what's made the favourite of frozen foods join in the social media conversation?

You've got to admit that Birdseye are on to a winner; what's better than a social media version of smiley faces? According to senior brand manager Pete Johnson, the idea behind the #NEW and #tasty labelled treats is to "get people talking around the table and help to make mealtimes more enjoyable". They feature five different potato shapes; the hashtag, @ symbol, an asterisk, the heart emoticon and our old favourite the smiley face emoticon. Yummy!

Is it an example of social media gone mad? Perhaps. Either way, it is a great example of different markets trying to get in on the social media craze. Whether Birdseye's marketing scheme will work or not, you at least have to give them points for trying.

From the days where Alphabites were the done thing, allowing children to practice their ABC's whilst dining on Birdseye's frozen finest, we've moved into a whole new era. Children (and, let's face it, adults too) will be happily arranging their favourite tweets or mentions at the dinner table.
