Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 6/9/13

There are a couple of significant firsts in this week’s SMPW: the first ever illustrated story told using Facebook, the first ever music video released on Facebook and the first time Deadline Day was followed in real-time on Twitter. There is also a second after a successful first, as well as  a campaign which I think is a first, but I hope will be a success.

1. Steve Lowtwait and Michael SmithHawk Funn

Illustrator Steve Lowtwait and writer Michael Smith have joined forces to create the first ever “social fiction” story: a tale told entirely on social media platforms. The story follows reverse-agoraphobe Hawk Funn and his long-suffering family as they try to reconcile his fear of living indoors with their suburban lifestyle.

The entire story is told on the character’s various Facebook accounts: Hawk, his wife January, his daughter Portia, his son Dieter and his best buddy Reuben Spancake. Lowtwait and Smith have even set up a Twitter account for Camp Gear Magazine, the publication which gives Hawk’s camping inventions scathing reviews.

If you want to follow the story, just like each character’s pages and you’ll get updates on their activity in the form of posts. The characters might even interact with you if your comments are interesting enough.

To get the project off the ground, Lowtwait and Smith have set up a Kickstarter campaign, where prizes include limited edition character art, an opportunity to say where the story goes next, the chance to be one of the supporting characters and, for one lucky investor, one of the main characters.

At the time of writing, the Kickstarter campaign has earned $4,335 of the $116,000 goal.

2. Jay Z – 'Holy Grail'

Last week, Jay Z released ‘Holy Grail’, his collaboration with Justin Timberlake, exclusively on Facebook – it was the first time in history that a single has been released on Facebook. The song was exclusive to the page for 24 hours, before being released across the rest of the web.

The video has been a massive success: it has been shared 3,000 times, liked 23,000 times and commented on 800 times.

3. Sky Sports News – Deadline Day
Yesterday was Transfer Deadline Day in English football and, with the updates and headlines coming thick and fast, Sky Sports News needed the best technology in order to report on each development quickly and completely.

Grabyo allowed Sky Sports News to post clips from their show on Twitter, sharing them in real-time to keep their Twitter followers up-to-date. Grabyo founder Will Neale said the following:
The real-time nature of our platform drives conversation by helping broadcasters publish live TV content onto these platforms faster than ever before. Broadcasters not only retain ownership of their content by releasing it before others, but also have the opportunity to monetise it with ads. We’re working with a number of broadcasters to launch real-time clip sharing on a wide variety of programmes in the coming months.
4. The National Trust – #GBwalk

After a successful 2012 campaign, in which over 1 million people got involved, the National Trust have begun another #GBwalk campaign, encouraging people to send in photos of their favourite hiking, ambling or jaunting destinations.

Here are some of the best photos so far:

5. Pure Sport – #ChooseTheRightTrack

Australian sportswear company Skins, under the guise of Pure Sport, has announced a new campaign aimed at tackling the doping problem in professional sport.

The hashtag #ChooseTheRightTrack will drive traffic from Twitter, Facebook and Google+ onto a dedicated site where people can sign a petition to eradicate doping from professional sport completely.

Infamous sprinter Ben Johnson, who was stripped of his gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, is the face of the campaign, encouraging athletes not to make the same mistakes he did.
