Social Media Promotions Of The Week 30/08/2013

It’s back! After a long hiatus, due to holiday and illness and a whole load of other reasons, SMF’s SMPW is back with a bang. A whole months worth of great social media promotions for you to feast on and, hopefully, get some inspiration for your own campaigns. In fact, they’re all SO GOOD that I’m not going to rate them from one to five, I’m going to put them in any old order I feel like (which, due to my OCD, will probably be alphabetical).

The Belize Tourism Board – A Trip To Belize.

I’m sure that, like me, you have been riveted to the final season of Breaking Bad, the hit US TV show about a family man whose cancer diagnosis forces him into cooking meth to pay the bills. In the most recent episode (spoiler alert!) shady lawyer Saul Goodman suggests that principal character Walter White send his DEA brother-in-law on “a trip to Belize”, a euphemism for killing him.

The Belize Tourism Board were quick to respond to the insinuation, offering the whole Breaking Bad cast a trip to Belize so that their shared opinion of the South American country could be altered. The Belize Tourism Board published the above invitation and sent out amusing tweets, such as this one, to the cast and creators of the hit show. The Board cleverly took advantage of a potentially damaging comment to publicise Belize as an attractive tourist destination. In fact, I can vouch for Belize: a friend just did a medical placement over there and is staying with me for a fortnight. He assured me that Belize is a pretty amazing place.

Hovis – Is Hovis Healthy?

Hovis have revamped their social media profiles in order to educate users on the health benefits eating Hovis can have. At the start of this month, the baker hosted a Q&A on Facebook with dietitian Elphee Medici.

They have also posted links to an online survey asking people if they know the health benefits Hovis products can have. In the survey, Hovis also asks for their customers’ opinions on what they would like to see on Hovis’ Facebook page, as well as information about their activity on the site. Hovis reported that the change of strategy has, so far, been a success in a Marketing Week article.

John Lewis Insurance – What Matters Most?

The insurance department of John Lewis, most famous for its department stores, is asking people “what matters most?” On Vine and Twitter, using the hashtag #whatmattersmost. All the videos posted onto Vine using the hashtag #whatmattersmost will be entered into a competition, with the winning video’s creator getting £1000 worth of John Lewis gift vouchers.

Every seven days a weekly winner will be chosen and rewarded with a Cannon EOS 700D Digital SLR. Another great user-generated content campaign, then. They’re really en vogue at the moment.

Nike – #JustDoIt

Everyone’s familiar with Nike’s iconic slogan – “Just Do It” (capitalised for effect) – but Nike have been a bit quiet about it of late: it hasn’t prominently featured in any adverts, for example, for a while. Earlier this month Nike decided to bring it back, but with a social media twist.

To keep your audience active and engaged, even Nike understands the necessity of social media interactions. So, to grab some attention online, Nike has released a hashtag, #JustDoIt (naturally). The hashtag supports a new advert, narrated by Bradley Cooper, which features sport stars LeBron James, Gerard Piqué and Serena Williams.

Paddy Power – Space Bet

To celebrate reaching 1 million Facebook fans, betting agency Paddy Power are offering punters the chance to win the chance to win £1 million. Yes, you read that right, it wasn’t a typo: Paddy Power is giving one (hopefully) lucky person the chance to make a bet in space, a bet that could win them £1 million. This is how they’re going to do it, according to Paddy Power:
It’s like a funny version of the Big Bang Theory in the office as the Paddy Power Space Academy explain how they’re sending a helium balloon into space, fitted with a radio transmitter and Raspberry Pi computer gadget. This state of the art kit combined with your punting expertise – what could possibly go wrong?!
Go to the Paddy Power blog to check out the competition.
