Twitter Reportedly Developing Music Discovery App

According to a recent report published by CNET, Twitter is developing a standalone music discovery app based on technology created by the recently acquired We Are Hunted. The app will be called Twitter Music. In other Twitter news, the service now has support for line breaks within tweets.

We Are Hunted is a three-year-old software company that monitors blogs, social media and BitTorrent for the most popular music tracks online, publishing its discoveries as industry-recognized billboard charts. The company has also created a number of apps for iOS and Android devices which allow users to discover, stream and share new music. The We Are Hunted site is currently down and its Twitter feed has been silent for a fortnight.

According to CNET’s sources, the music discovery technology created by We Are Hunted is being integrated with Twitter technology to create Twitter Music: a new standalone music discovery app which is planned for release by the end of the month. Twitter Music will monitor social media sites and specific websites, as well as its users’ actions – what musicians they follow on Twitter, for example – and then suggest artists and tracks based on the data it recovers. Songs will be streamed on the app via SoundCloud.

The app will invite users to sign in to their Twitter accounts to receive music recommendations based on their Twitter activity, but it will also be available to people without a Twitter account. Twitter Music has four tabs: “Suggested” lists recommended tracks and artists based on who the user follows and who the people they follow are following; “#NowPlaying” lists songs tweeted by people you follow who tweet using the #NowPlaying hashtag; “Popular” features trending tracks on the We are Hunted site; “Emerging” discovers hot new talent.

TwitterMusic, Twitter’s official account for all tweets musical, currently has 2.3 million followers. If Twitter Music hopes to compete with the likes of Pandora and Spotify, or even Facebook with its new app-focused layout, the new app will have to attract far more users than TwitterMusic has followers. Twitter and We Are Hunted were both unavailable for comment.

In other Twitter news: from today, Tweets will feature line breaks, so if you like writing Haikus in 140-character form you’re in luck. The update is not yet supported by the embedded tweets service, but companies will be able to use the feature to make their promoted tweets stand out from the crowd by taking up more space.
