Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 22/03/2013

This week, there were six social media promotions that caught my eye. I had a tough decision on my hands: which SMPW to drop. Finally, I came up with a compromise: I have narrowed this weeks SMPWs to five, but the sixth promotion has received an honourable mention. Here are this weeks SMPWs:

1. Jaguar – Desire

Performance car company Jaguar is running an online promotion to announce the release of the new F-Type in the UK.

A classy YouTube trailer teases viewers with footage from a Ridley Scott Associates produced short movie, which tells the story of an Englishman hired to deliver a car to a Gangster.

The Englishman is played by Homeland star Damien Lewis, the soundtrack is sung by Lana Del Rey and the car is the new Jaguar F-Type.

There is also a two-week competition on Facebook awarding fans who share information from Jaguar’s page.

2. Pepsi – Test Drive

Although clearly a fake, Pepsi’s new Pepsi Max YouTube advert is still very entertaining: professional racing car driver Jeff Gordon takes an “unsuspecting” car salesman for a few laps in a Chevrolet (who presumably have not too badly from the advert either).

The viewer is treated to hidden camera footage through the eyes of the disguised Jeff Gordon, as well as from a micro lens on a Pepsi can.

The video has almost 30 million views on YouTube.

3. Skittles – Build The Rainbow

To celebrate the company’s new upside-down rainbow logo, Skittles is asking its Facebook fans to help create a giant version of the logo on a specialised app, one skittle at a time.

A video runs in real-time on the app, with a solitary (and rather clueless) guard standing watch over a clear plastic container shaped like a smile.

Fans from Australia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland,  New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the UK are asked to add one skittle at a time by liking the page.

Every 15 minutes, more skittles are added in timed drops. After five hours and forty-five minutes, the Skittles rainbow contains 1,276 skittles, all of which are red.

100,000 people need to add skittles for the rainbow to be complete, at which point the public can decide how to destroy it.

4. Le Trefle – Emma

In this clever advert for Le Trefle toilet paper, a beleaguered wife gets her own back on her self-righteous husband. The husband lightly scolds his wife for using paper instead of his shiny new tablet for basic activities like note-making and drawing.

The wife gets her own back, however, when he forgets to replenish the toilet roll.

The video has over 3 million views on YouTube.

5. Carlsberg – The Friendship Test

Carlsberg has asked some of its fans to test how far their friends would go to save them.

Imagine, you get woken up in the middle of the night by a phone call. Your mate has managed to get himself into real trouble: he played a poker game with the wrong people and lost. Now he owes them 200 euros.

Carlsberg has filmed the reactions of each liberator as they enter the dangerous district where the poker game has been played in order to save their friends.

The video has over 2 million views on YouTube.

Honourable Mention

This Irn Bru advert just made me laugh, that's all.
