Foursquare Creates Map Celebrating 500 Million Check-ins In 3 Months
Foursquare has created an infographic displaying all the 500 Million Check-ins over the last month as white dots on a black map of the World. Foursquare says that what the map displays is “at the heart of three important things” that the company has been doing.
The first thing that Foursquare is focused on is “creating amazing personalized recommendations”:
“those check-ins you see aren’t just single points”, reads the Foursquare blog, “they’re links between all the other places people have been, too”.
Foursquare has been monitoring the activity of their users to find out which landmarks certain groups frequent, so that they can then recommend new venues nearby to where a user has checked in before:
“For example, when we see that a bunch of locals tend to check in to the same tucked-away taqueria after going to a nearby theater, they’re helping us understand the relationship between those two places. So, when someone new to the neighborhood is leaving that theater, Explore can recommend amazing tacos they might otherwise have missed out on.”
Secondly, the infographic displays how up-to-date the information on the Foursquare Explore database is.
“Take a look at our last 500,000,000 check-ins” says Foursquare. “Trace your commute, find your favorite landmark, and check out some of our favorite places, like New York, London, Oahu, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Melbourne, and Moscow.”
The 500 million check-ins by the more than 100 million Foursquare users cover the map, displaying an impressive amount of activity and connectivity.
Finally, the map shows people the activity in their area, reassuring them that they can get great recommendations from other people who use the service and live nearby, as well as people who visit the towns and cities they live in.
