Mark Zuckerberg Donates Shares To Charity Worth $500 Million

61339403CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has announced that a gift of 18 million shares of Facebook will be given to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Zuckerberg released the news on Tuesday evening via his Timeline that he and his wife Priscilla would be donating the gift. This is his second considerable charitable donation to date.

With Facebook shares currently valued at $27.71 (£17.01) each, the donation is equivalent to just under $500 million (just under £307 million).

Zuckerberg signed The Giving Pledge back in 2010 which was a commitment to give large proportions of his earnings to charity over his lifetime.

Prior to signing the pledge, the Facebook founder donated a gift of $100 million (over £61 million) to the Newark City Public School System having announced it on Oprah.

With this new gift donation, Zuckerberg hopes for it to be extremely effective as it is used to lay the foundations for new projects.

The founder of Facebook said that: "Together, we will look for areas in education and health to focus on next . . . I'm hopeful we'll be able to have as positive an impact in our next set of projects."
