Kony 2012: The Most Shared Social Video Ad of 2012



Kony 2012, a 30 minute video made by non-profit firm Invisible Children is the most shared social video of 2012 as published in the Unruly Global Viral Video Ads Chart.

Unruly have released a chart of the 20 most shared viral video ads that have been distributed across social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs.

The chart is based on shares rather than views as these are believed to have a greater, truer sense of ‘virality.’


Kony 2012 has generated over 10.1m shares via the popular social media networks since the launch of the video on March 5th and has by far the most shares of any ad on the chart.

A spokesperson for Unruly said that: “the incredible success of this 30-minute video demonstrates how a relatively unknown entity can make a global impact in social media with powerful content and a comprehensive distribution strategy.”

Videos in the top 10 of the chart had an increased share value from 16.8m in 2011 to a staggering 28m in 2012, making that a huge 67% increase in shares.

Sarah Wood, Co-Founder and COO of Unruly says that: “emotive content and bottom-up sharing stole the show this year. The world’s biggest brands can learn from Invisible Children: it’s not about a 30-second commercial anymore when a 30-minute video gets 10 million global shares.”
