Facebook Experiments With Ranked Comments

On Monday, Facebook began testing a change to the comments format on brand and subscriber pages, with comments that generate the highest level of engagement rising to the top of posts.

YouTube has a very similar comments system, where the comments on videos which receive the most likes are featured at the top of the comments list.

In the case of Facebook’s ranked comments, not only will likes promote comments, but hides will also demote them, the most unpopular comments falling to the bottom.

Facebook are hoping that since users will engage with the comments that most interest them, the most interesting comments will be the most easily engaged with – a virtuous circle, if you will.

Last week, Facebook introduced threaded comments, allowing users to reply to specific comments. In conjunction with ranked comments, threaded comments will safeguard against confusing conversations, ensuring that users are able to engage easily with other users on comment threads.
