Ozoshare and green social media

Dubbed as the social network for the green community, Ozoshare, which officially launched today, aims to unite companies and individuals in their shared ambitions to care for the environment.

Understanding that environmental issues need to be tackled now, Thomas Smith Jr. and Scott Peters founded the site to help spread the eco message by harnessing the power of social media. The network, which is completely user driven, allows members to share and discover environmentally friendly activities and issues. With the site currently only claiming 3,000 members, their ambition is strong as they aim to hit the 100,000 mark soon after this launch.

How does it work?

The site has been largely modelled on Facebook for ease of use but there are certain differences which must be noted. A key variance is how the site revolves around mutual interests and not friends. Ozoshare has divided these interests into six main categories: recycling, green energy, green living, global warming, wildlife preservation, and environmental conservation. Peters has noted that this will help build “small micro communities” devoted to certain issues that will grow to contain experts in that field. This will allow users to quickly discover salient information regarding their chosen environmental goals. At present the most popular interest on the network is ‘green living’.

For businesses, it has been argued that Ozoshare eclipses Facebook in terms of functionality. Central to this is the custom page creation which allows a company to embed their content into their account. This is likely to benefit manufacturers and natural retailers who can embed their ‘e-commerce or lead generation pages’. Businesses can also make use of the ‘Ozo Seal’ on their websites which, when clicked, direct the individual back to their bio page on Ozoshare. This could bring about the linking of businesses who share like-minded environmental concerns.

Ozoshare is not confined to just business usage, as numerous other individuals, groups and organisations can utilise it for environmental work. For instance, the network can be utilised in raising funds, educating and discussing topics with others and creating green partnerships. The launching of the site will hopefully be key in the pursuit of a more environmentally friendly world and it will promote action for the future.

Other social networks and the environment

The launching of Ozoshare reflects an emerging trend in the world of social media to embrace the environmentally friendly world. In recent years there have been many other attempts to set up green social networks and even now the major players have recognised the importance and possible support this can gain. With Facebook recently revealing their carbon footprint, it shows their growing desire to have minimal impact upon the environment. The report showed Facebook’s carbon footprint to have been 285,000 metric tons in 2011, which compared to Google's 1.5m tons in 2010, is significantly better. In addition, it revealed that Facebook ran off 23% renewable energy sources but coal power still produced the majority of energy at 27%. There is still great room for change but this marks definite steps forward.

Let’s hope that Ozoshare can succeed in their mission and help further the green message on a platform where it has previously failed. Perhaps other social media platforms and individuals will take note and learn from the site’s wealth of information.
