LinkedIn Developer Platform updated

blog.linkedin.com

Whilst the other big social media players have been stealing headlines recently, LinkedIn has been quietly working, for over a year now, to develop and lever the platform across the web.

Collaborating with around 75,000 developers on the project, LinkedIn has been striving to create innovative developer and resource tools. The idea behind the whole venture was to ‘stimulate application development and supply its service with enough content to keep members continually engaged’. Out of this, it is likely we will see co-developers Wordpress, Evernote and Flipboard, amongst others, feature more prominently on the site.

Crucially there have been three major changes to the LinkedIn site, explained by Madhu Gupta (Head of API Platform Product and Strategy). First of all, the sign-in screen has been remodelled to, ‘enable developers to request email addresses from the people who want to log in with LinkedIn’, whilst also denoting what types of data can be accessed by the user. It is expected the new sign-in screen will persuade publishers and mobile app creators to add the LinkedIn log-in option to their platforms. The new share API helps developers to gain exposure through crediting those who have their content shared with a ‘via’ link. Finally, the developer website has been adjusted to reflect a more clean and simple style, to ensure easy navigation and usage.

This all comes after a successful second quarter for LinkedIn who reported an 89% revenue increase and 6% rise in shares. It seems that now, more than ever, LinkedIn is playing a key role in connecting companies with professionals seeking employment. Arguably, LinkedIn commands the greatest influence in this niche and the developments discussed highlight the site’s desire to be the ‘single place where business folks go to get, discuss, and share news’. Subsequently, decent content plays a huge part in this and the new attribution links help connect people through this. The creativity of LinkedIn’s users will play a huge part in the success of the new developer tools, helping to further boost the identity and reach of the site.
