Twitter Tips - Getting Started

Part 1 – Getting Started
At
first, Twitter can be a very daunting place to be. Your account has no
followers and you are wondering where you should start in order to build a
successful Twitter profile. Competition is fierce because there are millions of
accounts on Twitter all after one thing, FOLLOWERS! Many people dive right into
the deep end and follow just about anyone, hoping they will follow back. But
even if these random people do follow back, they may not be the type of
followers you actually want. The best followers are people that will regularly
engage with Twitter itself and interact with your profile. But before all that,
you must have an inviting profile.
1. Changing your profile picture
Although this may seem like common sense to change your
profile picture, not everyone does. Not changing your picture will result in
your profile displaying one of the default pictures below, and your profile
will not be taken seriously by other Twitter users.
Personally, a profile picture works best when the picture is
square in shape and is of yourself or your company logo. Twitter will do its
best to show the full photo if it is not square, but you may not find your
desired result. The picture also needs to be no more than 700kb and in a JPG,
GIF or PNG file.
2. Your bio & website
Arguably your bio is as important as your profile picture.
Your bio will be one of the first things a twitter user will read and learn
about you and if it is dull and boring, people will be less inclined to follow
you. Twitter allows up to 160 characters (20 less than a tweet), so you will
have to be precise and interesting. The bio also allows you to add the “@” sign
to create a link to another Twitter account (for example, your official
business account). This is important because the more places your twitter link
is, the better!
Adding your website (that’s if you have one!) is also
important because your link will be displayed below your bio and twitter users
will see this when viewing your profile.
3. Discovering sources
Now your profile is more appealing to people, it’s time to
start growing your account. Firstly you will need to follow people that you
have an interest in. Many businesses have accounts on Twitter that will tweet
news and interesting information about their company. Performing a search on
Twitter will help you locate your favourite businesses and people. Twitter also
allows you to look at who your favourite people are following too, and you
might be interested in them as well.
